STATE PARK CABINS AND RESORTS FOR FAMILY VACATIONS
State parks have some of the lowest-priced resorts and cabins in the United States. Established in areas of great natural beauty, state parks are found on the edge of towering mountain peaks and crystalline lakes, nestled among rolling green hills, presiding over vast prairies and harsh desert landscapes, and marking sites of historical significance Every state in the union has parks that are open to the public, and more than half offer remarkably low-priced cabin accommodations and resort facilities
While private resorts might have several hundred scenic acres most state parks have thousands of acres of unspoiled wilderness usually selected for their breathtaking scenery. Many are situated on lakes rivers and seashores, offering a wide selection of reasonably priced recreational activities. At the very least, you can expect to find swimming, boating or excellent hiking trails. Most state park resorts also feature golf tennis boating lawn games nature centers and horseback riding among other activities
Many of the first state parks were developed in the 1930s through the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), one of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's most successful New Deal programs. Stone and log lodges and cabins contain the legacy of a conservation program that did much to preserve the natural and historical treasures of many states in the nation. Other, newer parks have since been developed, with up-to-date lodgings and modern amenities.
All states will provide you with information on their state park accommodations, either through their tourist office or the state park office. Generally the parks are busiest on summer weekends and holidays and throughout the months of July and August. Some parks start taking reservations as early as a year in advance. Because state park cabins and resorts are such a bargain, they are popular and fill up quickly. Cancellations occur, however, so there's always a chance of getting in. Do your homework and make sure you know the reservation system required by each state.
