ANGUILLA
LONG AND NARROW Anguilla (An-GWIL-la), taking its name from the Spanish word for eel, lies about 5 miles (8 km) north of St. Martin and 60 miles (96 km) north of St. Kitts. Unlike the other Leeward Islands, low-lying Anguilla is of coral rather than volcanic formation. Cottages and houses are sprinkled across the island, with concentrations around the villages of South Hill, Stoney Ground, Blowing Point and Island Harbor. Island handicrafts can be found in The Valley, Anguilla's capital. Accommodations on the island include luxury hotels and resorts as well as small, low-key inns and guest houses.
Columbus sighted Anguilla during his second voyage in 1493; it is not known whether he actually visited the island. English settlers from St. Kitts colonized Anguilla in 1650, and the island has remained a British territory ever since. In 1688 the island was attacked by a party of Irishmen who eventually settled there: their surnames are in evidence today. Anguilla repelled two attacks by the French in the 18th century. The island declared its independence from the Associated State of St. Kitts and Nevis and became a self-governing territory of the British Commonwealth in 1967. After several years of negotiations, Anguilla became a separate British dependent territory Dec. 19, 1980.
It is said that the first seeds of the highly prized sea island cotton came from Anguilla. Today the island's economy is based on tourism and financial services.
Anguilla has many small boutiques, specialty stores, art galleries and crafts shops. Some local trendy shops include the Ants and Crafts Center in The Valley; Irie Life, overlooking the scenic Road Bay and Sandy Ground; Cheddies' Carving Studio, on the island's west end, containing sculptures and carvings; Java Wraps, showcasing fashions made from cloth created on the island of Java; The Mariners' boutique, offering a variety of items; Malliouhana's, presenting an extensive selection of fine jewelry; and Oluwakemi's, featuring Afrocentnic fashions and accessories. Elegant resort wean, casual summer fashions and accessories can be found at boutiques such as Caribbean Fancy, Images and Maleona's.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are available from roadside stands throughout the island. Shopping hours are generally Mon-Sat. 8-5. Banking hours are Mon.-Thurs. 8-3, Fri. 8-5
